About this calculator
A car loan spreads the price of a car over monthly instalments. This calculator shows what you will pay each month and how much extra you pay in markup over the whole loan.
Change the down payment, the loan period or the rate to see how each one moves the instalment. A bigger down payment and a shorter period cost less in total, but raise the monthly amount.
How it works
- The amount financed is the car price minus your down payment.
- The monthly instalment uses the standard loan formula with your yearly rate divided into twelve months.
- Total markup is everything you pay over the amount financed.
- The year by year table shows how much of your payments go to principal and how much to markup.
Common questions
- How much down payment do banks ask for on a car loan?
- It differs by bank and by the kind of car. Many banks ask for a down payment of 10% to 30% or more. Ask the bank you plan to use before you decide.
- Is the markup rate fixed or variable?
- Banks offer both. Variable rates move with KIBOR, so your instalment can change. Check which kind you are getting.
- Does the calculator include insurance and fees?
- No. Insurance or takaful, registration and processing fees are extra, so add them to your budget.
